The first black members of Congress took office in 1870. The first black member of Congress outside the old Confederacy took office in 1929. The first black Democrat in Congress took office in 1935. The first black Democratic Senator took office in 1993.

Yeah, Jim Crow in its later form was still in its infancy in the 1880s & 1890s, not that those were exactly good times to be black in the South. The 1900-1920 period moved more from vigilantism & neglect to systematic govt discrimination.https://twitter.com/tkdylan/status/1252378507436425223 …

And then, from the ‘20s to the mid-‘40s, Chicago had the only African-American representatives. Not so much because we were ahead of our time, more so that the political bosses could count on the black vote.
