Now I'm catching up with @TCM and watching Jules Dassin's "Night and the City," a dark, terrifying masterpiece that is perfect from start to finish. (My marathon viewing of "Lonesome Dove" will start early Monday morning.) Note well the Franz Waxman score—one of his finest.

I should also mention the presence in "Night in the City" of the incomparable Herbert Lom, a masterly character actor who didn't make nearly enough first-rate films but was great whenever he did (I saw him the other night in "Hopscotch," which might be his best performance ever).
