Historians don’t do counterfactuals, because obviously there is no way of knowing. But I am struck by how many very realistic possibilities between 1976 and 1984 would’ve massively influenced whether and how conservatism rose.

I think not just Nunn. I think Bush really screwed up. He didn’t seem to give any thought to whether it would put Gingrich into the leadership.
