We just spent *$2 trillion,* and the package was premised on substituting for income the government forced people to forego. Are we expecting lockdowns to be continuing in January? https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/coronavirus-rel-ef-adam-serwer-stimulus-fantasy/ … https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/03/the-coronavirus-relief-package-isnt-socialism/ …https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1250811392342581249 …

I've said this a ton before but remember *the second* a Democrat is elected president the entire GOP will oppose large Federal rescue and recovery spending, start demagoguing the deficit, and calling for austerity.

State and local budget deficits from lost revenue plus a huge increase in public health expenses will absolutely be going on in January and likely well beyond it. Even if lockdowns are lifted, economy and daily movement won’t be “normal” either.

The whole premise of this argument is that Republicans in 2021 will oppose spending any federal funds, as if there hasn't *already* been an enormous expenditure by that point.

Yes, at which point we likely will have spent many more trillions beyond CARES and Fed support and probably will require still more if you want a V shaped recovery. Bear in mind we may be facing a second resurgence then and almost no way we have a vaccine for some time after that

When they say this is a WW II style mobilization, they’re not joking around. This is going to take years.

The tweet is saying that a Republican legislature is willing to run deficits if there is a Republican executive. If the executive is a Democrat, they suddenly oppose deficits.

In fact, Daniel, prior to Covid tRump grew the deficit 15% or THREE TRILLION DOLLARS. He was running annual deficits bigger than the debt-lover OBAMAs! Prior to Covid our debt grew to $23 TRILLION and former conservatives like Dan never said a word. Remember Grover Nordquist?
