Seems inconceivable today that a band could be as big in the UK as the Beatles were in 1963, & few in the US had even heard of them.https://twitter.com/johnpelwood/status/1250502572403810306 …

About 5 months before the Ed Sullivan Show appearance that made him a household name in the US, an unknown George Harrison visited tiny Benton, Illinois, sat in with a local band, & bought the guitar he'd use to record "I want to hold your hand." https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/charming-story-george-harrison-vacationed-small-town-america-180974593/ …

I especially loved the detail about George Harrison's sister getting Beatles 45s in the mail and calling local Illinois radio stations begging them to play the band's music.

There continues to be big divide between UK and USA stardom for rockers. Bands like The Libertines, The Jam, Stereophics, or Supergrass are legendary in the UK but barely made a mark in the USA. Not Beatles big, but still a big discrepency.

Reminds me of seeing Oasis, in a small arena, as a mere opener for the Black Crowes

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were only a modest success as mainstream artists, but I remember them playing the pizza cellar, which is a ways from being on MTV. cc @DaveHolmes

The UK has had a lot of popular musical acts there that never catch on in the US. Robbie Williams, Slade, heck, almost every NWOBHM band

Yeah, Robbie Williams is very little known here vs the UK.

The only way you'd have heard of them would be if you happened to notice Please, Please Me on Top-40 radio.
