A new, hybrid people can of course be created the same way any people is created: by a shared history. (In 1492, neither Mexicans nor African-Americans existed). But to contend for a specific, distinct Mexi-Korean identity in Los Angeles excludes Mexicans in Texas, Koreans in NY.

I would submit that there is indeed a powerful shared identity among black Americans, drawn from long history & visible in culture & a sense of brotherhood; I would agree that recent arrivals from Africa do not share that identity.
