The underlying assumption here is that a free press is supposed to act as a collective.https://twitter.com/samstein/status/1247295050943549442 …

Not the biggest deal right now, but there continues to be a lack of collective action problem in the press corps when it comes to Trump. When he speaks like that to @jonkarl the other reporters in the room need to call it out, in real time, as counterproductive, offensive, etc...

No. That's not it at all. Press can make their own editorial choices. No one is telling anyone to write anything or prodcast anything. But the institution of the press does need collective defending like when myself and others chastised the Obama WH for excluding Fox News

The problem now is that we have news orgs trying to collectively act to declare presidential briefings during a pandemic to be non-newsworthy - including orgs that were happy to slather Trump with free airtime for primary campaign rallies when he was a handy club against GOPers.

Orgs that are trying to promote that line are not in a position, as in the past, to argue from neutral principles for open access to the briefing room.

Is this your objection? News organizations, taken together, are a big collective consciousness-- it/they think, act, etc as a unified whole. And since news orgs covered Trump rallies four years ago, it would be hypocritical of it/them not to cover the briefings. Is that it?
