Take the time to read @jimgeraghty blow-by-blow walkthrough of why it's more likely that the virus came from a lab in Wuhan than from eating bats. ("Came from a lab" here meaning, most likely, an accidental, not intentional, release - Chernobyl style). https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/04/coronavirus-china-trail-leading-back-to-wuhan-labs/ …

Dang. This is like the white wine version of QAnon. We can’t prove that it *wasn’t* a lab accident (so we can’t rule that out yet), but nothing in this article is any proof that it was.pic.twitter.com/o8dnIhLSzp

We also can't prove the wet-market theory, which means that regardless of what theory of spread to the community you think more likely, you have to rely on circumstantial evidence. Which is how journalists & courts of law examine a lot of questions.

The wet market theory is already questionable, because for almost a month now, there have been reports the first cases in November were not connected to the wet market. (Not new news.) https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3074991/coronavirus-chinas-first-confirmed-covid-19-case-traced-back …

I think it’s more like apophenia than conspiracy theory. As I said to Dan, it’s not that the premise is implausible. The evidence (for now) is more like inference, conjecture, hearsay. Reddit-like sleuthing is not a valid means of inquiry for something with this death toll.

That said, the US can put pressure on China to release more info on the November cases, on this supposed missing researcher, on the lab. The studied viruses can be sequenced and compared. Problem is—no one trusts the CCP govt., so any exculpatory evidence will be hard to believe.

And presumably, deciding to do so would first require someone to marshal the circumstantial evidence supporting why this is worth inquiring into in that way. Hmmmm.

But—think of that fine line between a yarn-webbed serial killer wall and a witch hunt. Like with Sandy Hook, the degree of human grief from this pandemic requires not just caution in what we assert, but the kind of grave soberness that avoids haste.
