Been thinking a lot today (for no reason) about how absolutely atrocious Eric Clapton's 1980s singles are. "I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart," "Forever Man," "She's Waiting," "Pretending," "No Alibis," "Bad Love". Blech.

You forgot “It’s In The Way That You Use It” The 80s were when most Gen Xers were introduced to Clapton and it was an awful first impression and these mostly cheesy songs were the reason.

When my mom insisted Clapton was cool in the 60s and early 70s I just didn’t believe her.

In his defense, Clapton WAS pretty awesome in his younger days. (Weren't we all though?) Case in point:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeFwaWFTGYU …

80s Clapton isn't that bad! I mean, it's a far cry from greatness but I don't turn the dial when "Pretending" comes on.

Bad Love has a fine hook. Clapton is definitely a whole different artist after Derek & the Dominoes broke up, but there is still a lot of good stuff there.

Yes. Also the beer-commercial version of After Midnight is, while a bit inferior to the original, an excellent song. In fact, it is arguably a better interpretation of the song.
