The debate over Catholic integralism, for example, looks a lot less oogdey-boogedy if you start with the premise that many of the more exotic parts of the integralist platform can be enacted into law only by attracting a durable supermajority of the American public.

If we start with the premise that the Constitution's original meaning places some hard limits on what can be done in American electoral politics, that takes off the table a lot of the take-to-its-logical-extreme extremes.
