Reagan projected moderation, but was not at all moderate (although structural conditions constrained much, if not all of his radicalism). That’s a majority posture. Sanders projected militant radicalism, but is really an incremental sewer socialist. That’s a factional posture.

It’s sincere for him. But it’s also a weakness to have a back bencher emerge who then gets rewarded by a intensely loyal faction for qualities that made him a back bencher. Reagan won union office, sold stuff on tv, worked collaboratively in films, was two time guv of largest

state. At every moment of his long career, he was trying to persuade as many people as possible to approve of him. The left—social democracy—needs somebody who gets that next time and beyond.

Yeah, this is why the "Sanders 20=Reagan 80" parallel never worked. Senator of smallest state is not=Gov of the largest in terms of learning how to appeal beyond your base. Reagan had been a Dem! He knew the language.

All of that is true. Bernie is much mire similar to Goldwater or, even, Taft. But ironically, “Mayor Bernie” was himself a pragmatic, successful reformist. He shouid have reminded more people of that.

Small-time local government forces you to be pragmatic. Could say the same of the local govt time of Biden, Palin, Rubio, any number of others.

Right. But, of that group (and yes, you’re right about Palin, although she lost quality entirely), only Bernie and Palin were executives. That’s always a plus unless your record is completely disastrous (see also B. Clinton, small state guv)

I have a close relative who dealt extensively with Palin when she was Governor. Says the person he dealt with was unrecognizable from the one that she became.
