@SeanTrende great book#TheLostMajority right now and didn't the progressive caucuses align with the republicans in the 1920's setting up the disappointment and desertion of the R party into FDR's waiting hands in 1932?? -
There was a significant progressive movement within both parties between 1900-20, but Harding & Coolidge both ran very much as conservatives after 8 years of a progressive D president.

"Rout of Democrats" was not the same thing as "rout of progressivism." Lots of Republicans were progressives then.
