Actually, Americans are notorious for discovering within the first few months of any war quite how many things were not properly prepared, stockpiled, or updated. We sent the Army to Cuba in 1898 with tins of food leftover from the Civil War.https://twitter.com/jbendery/status/1242080424588910592 …

In 1917, we didn't send unprepared men into battle in France because we were so unprepared we didn't even have the men. We had the world's 17th largest army.

I could go on, but: while none of this is good, even the best preparedness will typically turn out to be inadequate in the early stages of a crisis.

And in Korea we had WWII leftovers, etc. Very common.

And we all should know that the acronym SNAFU (I won't spell it out...) was coined by U.S. Marines during World War II...

Dan, you are correct. We also sent them to fight the Spanish with Krag-Jorgensen rifles while they used Mausers. In WWI, we allowed our soldiers to be equipped with inferior Chauchat MGs. The BB Iowa was forced to use WW2 propellant in the Gulf War. I could go on and on.
