Are The Who the greatest live band of all time? I'd have to say no, for the primary reason that you can't really be the greatest without any sort of major improvisational element (the three best-ever are the Dead, King Crimson, and Can). But they're the most *exciting* one ever.

From 1969-1970 the Who basically played the same setlist every night: pretty much what you hear on the reissued 1CD LIVE AT LEEDS plus the entirety of Tommy. And yet every single performance is worth hearing. They're all diffferent, they all have different energy.

LIVE AT LEEDS is one of those records where I actually think the cliche line is correct: this really is the single greatest rock live album of all time (you don't need the 2CD full concert, just get the 1CD reissue). But, and here's some real irony: they were even better in 1969.

I still prefer One for the Road as live albums go, but the Leeds version of Magic Bus in particular is transcendent.
