I agree that parties should have much more rigorous rules regarding who runs and several other things, including how primaries are run, when they occur, etc.

Could parties institute a system where you need, like, endorsements from a certain number of current officeholders/stakeholders before you were allowed to compete in the primary and win pledged delegates?

I don't support Sanders but he has a lot of passionate Dem supporters. Even if there was a way to keep him out, it would be a bad idea.
