Bill Bryson writes well - if briefly - on this in his book on Australia - the plan to surrender almost the entire continent, the push by the UK to send Aussie troops to India, & the post-war decision to welcome more immigrants. (Population was just 7.5 million in 1945)

Prior to visiting Australia last year we were unaware of how the U.S. saved them from the Japanese. Something for our country to be proud of. Some Aussies are still grateful.
