Reminds me of Nixon's adage that you run as far to the right as you can for the primary and get back to the center as quickly as you can for the general (very loose paraphrasing).

Yes. Politicians today are actually far more moderate than many of those they represent. I realized this during the Kavanaugh hearings, when Cory Booker’s fury was so obviously feigned—clearly an attempt to channel the rage of his constituents.

Not just polarized--fragmented. Two large coalitions were forged during the 1970s--liberal and conservative--and by aligning with them, the parties both strengthened themselves and moderated politics. Those coalitions have now splintered, killing the parties' moderating power.
