It seems somehow grimly inevitable that every principled conservative - and every center-left figure who mocked their distress for four years - who wants to pick a side in 2020 will be forced to go for either Trump or Bernie.

I don't think Trump is as difficult a choice for principled conservatives as he was before establishing a policy record. This seems to be more of a dilemma for the pundit class on both the right and left.

Agreed. Trump held his end of the bargain and then some. Tax reform, judges, Israel. It was McCain who prevented the repeal of Obamacare.

I get why the David French's of the world stick to their guns. NeverTrump is their business model. But for a regular conservative voter, Trump's policy + concerns about policy advocated by his likely opponents far outweigh his poor behavior.

In David's case, it's not a business model, it's sincerely held Christian conviction.

I used to believe that, but am far less certain now because of the hypocrisy that has been evident in both his analysis and what he chooses to focus upon.

The professed religion of political candidates is irrelevant. What matters is the compatibility of their policies foremost and behavior secondarily with one's religious faith. Religious litmus tests are ugly, and you should be ashamed of espousing that idea.
