Something almost everyone gets wrong: ultimately, it isn't the Senate that's the "jury" in a Presidential impeachment trial, it's the voters. It won't be successful unless a substantial portion of a President's voters turn on him/her, which is at it should be.

Impeaching the President overrides the will of the voters and is the closest thing to a recall the Constitution provides. Impeaching the President against the popular will may produce short-term gains, but inflicts long-term damage on the party responsible and the nation.
