Given that only 11 states seceded from the Union, it would be sort of astounding if they were currently represented by more than 22 Senators. How did you count 13? Please, please tell me, @JohnJHarwood, that you don't think your native Kentucky was a Confederate state. https://twitter.com/JohnJHarwood/status/1223694263432765442 …

Also, of the 22 Senators who represent states of the former Confederacy, one is a Democrat, one is African-American, and two are Cuban-American sons of immigrants. Also, those states gave us two of the three living Democratic ex-presidents.

In the immortal (if probably apocryphal) words of Abraham Lincoln: "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky."

So did the Arizona Territory. But those were essentially dissidents from state governments that did not recognize secession. They Mayor of New York wanted to secede, but he didn't have the votes to bring his state with him, either.https://twitter.com/Toral1/status/1223721785591582721 …

If you insist on keeping score of this nonsense at home, Bill Clinton (who was from a former Confederate state) got 8 Not Guilty votes on his impeachment from Senators representing former Confederate states. Nobody at the time argued that those votes were somehow tainted.

deleted a tweet because I made a tabulation mistake. 23 of 51 Senate GOP votes to block Bolton testimony came from states of the old Confederacy, not 25. apologies for the error
