Which is not a totally unreasonable stance. When you have a crime, you have a clear case for removal. When the charge is abuse of power, you have an arguable case for removal - and in an arguable case, things like public opinion & an approaching election matter more.

This is a problem: The idea that politicians simply follow voter preference rather than lead, i.e., shape voter preference. Does anyone doubt that if several swing state GOP senators came out in favor of impeachment, that it would change voters' views on impeachment?

Our system isn’t designed to compensate for a party and an electorate who are morally bankrupt. To that end, Trump really can shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it. He knows it. His supporters know it. So long as they keep his poll numbers up, he is unstoppable.
