I cannot stress enough how bad the 1996 GOP field was.https://twitter.com/SteveKornacki/status/1222945080039878657 …

Because the GOP ceded the field to Dole out of some misguided sense that he was owed the nomination as a career achievement award.

Kemp should have run. Phil Gramm was the best in the field but had zero charisma. Probably any of them would have lost.

Possibly. Maybe probably. But nobody wanted to challenge Bush 4 years earlier because he seemed so strong. And then he weakened and Clinton was there to take advantage. Someone should have challenge Dole. At least to ensure he was up to the challenge.

There were half a dozen candidates, and Alexander & Gramm had real qualifications. It's not as if nobody else ran besides Buchanan & Forbes.

I was under the impression the GOP hoped Colin Powell was going to run... and then had to settle for Dole when Powell declined. I could also be wrong. I was 14 at the time.

There was a lot of sentiment for Powell with the party establishment. He'd have been a strong candidate, but only if he could win the trust of pro-life voters (also a challenge for Dole, Forbes).
