Oh please; Nixon and McCarthy both loved targeting the constituency of their opponents -- to say nothing of the decades long campaign to make hippies and liberals into targets of disdain (and we see the results of that today).

I disagree with most of what you say except for this. I found it problematic when Romney did his 47% bit, and I also found it problematic when Hillary did her deplorables bit. It just smacks of insufferable elitism
