I've got no quarrel with mocking Trump in this way; presidents are supposed to be big boys able to take the punch, and Trump has an Ivy League degree and a gold-plated Manhattan penthouse. But going off like this on the voters is a really bad look in a democracy. https://twitter.com/JesseKellyDC/status/1222129453301686272 …

Of course, it says a lot about Don Lemon's show that neither he nor any guest saw the problem. Lemon is, at least in theory, a news journalist.

There have always been, & will always be, ignorant & resentful people in both party's voting bases. The difference is that only one side's base is seen as fair game for the media. Also, the whole point of democracy is that everybody gets a say, no matter what they don't know.

Abe Lincoln's belief in the dignity of every worker endeared him to working-class voters who didn't much like being sneered at.pic.twitter.com/qkGqryYX24

One reason we let every citizen vote is human dignity: everybody gets a say in how they're governed. But the other is humility: yes, lots of voters know very little. But *nobody* knows everything. Everyone is ignorant of *something*. That's why we need the wisdom of crowds.

I still blame Jon Stewart, more than anyone else, for mainstreaming the practice of targeting scorn at the other party's voters rather than principally at political leaders.

Oh please; Nixon and McCarthy both loved targeting the constituency of their opponents -- to say nothing of the decades long campaign to make hippies and liberals into targets of disdain (and we see the results of that today).

Funny how both of those are now universally panned, however assaults against voters on the right are not.

Right! 30 years of Fox News demonizing liberals played no role at all!

I disagree with most of what you say except for this. I found it problematic when Romney did his 47% bit, and I also found it problematic when Hillary did her deplorables bit. It just smacks of insufferable elitism

Long before “own the libs” was a thing, Stewart cultivated the audience of clapping seals phenomenon where people are there for the owns more than the jokes.
