One of several things MLK & Lincoln had in common: they understood that taking a unifying, optimistic, inclusive stance will help you build a coalition for your goals, even though it will never win over your bitterest enemies or shield you from periods of unpopularity.
I think it's fairer to say that he, like Lincoln, understood that some people would never stop hating him & his cause.
