Gen. De Gaulle visited Gen. Pershing in the US during WWII. Pershing, going senile at the time, asked how his old friend Petain was doing, clearly unaware of Petain's traitorous actions. Without missing a beat, De Gaulle replied, "Last time I saw him he was doing well."

Had Petain died in 1938, he'd still be remembered mainly as a hero, at least in France.
