1. Baseball has to come down hard enough on the sign-stealing thing to ensure everyone gets the message that rules will be enforced. If you don't enforce rules, you don't actually have rules.

I actually get that though. That can be a safety issue. Aluminum bats allow the ball to fly faster, which can be dangerous for the pitcher. Stealing signs is ok, but not if done in a certain way. This is like allowing a spitball, but not a vaseline ball.

Runner-on-second sign stealing isn't cheating, it's more like a poker player reading a tell. But a poker player using an elaborate setup of secret cameras and mirrors to read the cards is cheating.

It’s absurd pearl clutching. 60 day suspensions would have been fine. And then repeal the rule. Make teams switch up their signs. Give them all Bluetooth. I don’t care.

The difference is that the competition should be primarily among the players on the field - 9 vs 9. If the runner can pick up the signs and relay them to the batter, it's perfectly fair. And equally available to both teams. Buzzers & binoculars aren't.
