This is a really good observation from @jimgeraghty, though I'd put one asterisk on it: The ex-mayor of South Bend is a plausible nominee right now, something that seems hard to imagine pre-Trump https://www.nationalreview.com/the-morning-jolt/the-political-infighting-heats-up/ …pic.twitter.com/yilKhKxq8M

Thank you. I’d grant you that, but Buttigieg also fits that preexisting archtype of JFK, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama: Young, bright, optimistic, wonky, good speeches, “America’s brightest days are still ahead of us,” blah blah blah.

Yeah, Trump broke down traditional Republican preferences for a more experienced nominee, but Obama had already led the way on the D side. The Democrats put John Edwards on a national ticket!

I think you're both right: There's a longtime mold of "Smart young reformer guy!" on the Dem side, but I don't think his resume would have been enough to get him slotted into that framework (for voters, endorsers, or the press) without Trump.

I think he was a good enough fill-in because of the problem @Olivianuzzi spotted for Booker. Old news for news media, unknown outside Acela corridor.

Buttigieg occupies the lane that Beto was supposed to fill.

There were a whole ton of people who could have theoretically filled that lane (Beto, Harris, Booker, even Bullock or Ryan or Moulton) which is why it was so interesting Buttigieg ended up being the one this cycle who took off

Really don't know what you guys are talking about. Buttigieg is polling at low single digits with AA voters signalling he has no political future. But keep fluffing him, though.

Beto leaned into identity politics in a way Pete doesn’t. (The real Beto story is there is no constituency outside of 1,200 Twitter accounts for capitalism-neutral identity politics.)

This is the most underrated reality of the Democratic Primary that Pete avoided cultural warriors just like Biden usually did. (there are limited examples like Hyde Amendment but 80% of voters don't even know that is)
