If Trump is abnormal - and in many ways he is, but not in every way - the proper posture is for news journalists to lay out the facts of why and trust their audience to understand. The idea that there's a journalistic obligation to act like an activist is corrosive.

Shouldn't the media directly address his gross immorality as gross immorality? If another president mocked the physical appearance of others in a rally, wouldn't the media denounce this as immoral and the person unfit for high office?

Edward R. Murrow - was he acting like an activist, in your view? Genuine question. His shows about Sen. McCarthy certainly seemed bordering on activist to me, yet I would never characterize them as “corrosive.” Sometimes journalists have a moral obligation to take a stand.

Pushing the line, but then, go back and watch what he was actually doing, it was not like CNN today. The bigger problem is when "sometimes" is all the time, 24/7. And they've been like this for years, long before Trump. It's simply partisanship.

The problem is, most journalists think that acting like an activist IS their obligation.

If the media were purely factual in reporting Trump they would be more successful. When their reporting bleeds into activism the public can see that. Their audience then becomes the converted, and their ability to affect how people, especially moderates, see Trump is weakened.

a better question is are those "abnormalities" positive or negative, given what we've seen from "normal" pols over the years Remember Edison was "abnormal" in the sense that he could build and conceive things most "normal" people of the day could not

There’s also the impulse from the other side to treat any criticism of Trump as deep-state bias liberal media dem propaganda. That needs to stop too.
