Reagan wasn't afraid to challenge party leadership; he fought the establishment in 1966, ran vs incumbent in 1976. But he had a keen sense of timing. He didn't run full-out in 1968, didn't primary Nixon in 1972. He waited until the moment when changing party leaders was possible.
