Reagan wasn't afraid to challenge party leadership; he fought the establishment in 1966, ran vs incumbent in 1976. But he had a keen sense of timing. He didn't run full-out in 1968, didn't primary Nixon in 1972. He waited until the moment when changing party leaders was possible.

You can't invoke Reagan as your model for planning the post-Trump GOP if you're screaming at Nikki Haley for following Reagan's Nixon-era playbook.

Our time & issues are not the same as Reagan's, but his basic playbook for political success is still a winner: http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2015/10/politicshistory_13.php …

Perfectly stated. He’d work on his own brand of conservatism, he wouldn’t go around claiming he was a Nixonian.

Reagan would never actively support any D against any R. He would definitely campaign against a Sanders nominated D and maybe Warren against Trump. Might hold his fire a bit for the others.

Reagan was a great President but it’s a mistake to make him a saint and compare him to today’s leaders;he was human as are current leaders. I remember times when I wasn’t enthralled with actions Reagan took.

I don't understand how this thread is consistent with your pinned Tweet. Does Nikki Haley want people to think she opposed Trump?

The time will come when she makes use of having backed Rubio. That time is not yet.
