Breckenridge, elected VP for James Buchanan in 1856, got the nomination of the Southern rump Democratic party when the party split in 1860, then ended up joining the Confederacy as a general & later Confederate Secretary of War. He fled the US for 3 years after 1865.

Breckenridge was 54 when he died. The only VP to die younger was Daniel Tompkins, Monroe's VP, who entered office at 42, was the only VP to serve two full terms between 1796 & 1912, but suffered from lingering injuries & alcoholism & died at 50, three months after leaving office.

I would love to hear
@hughhewitt talk about him. The man is an encyclopedia on the life of Nixon. For all of his abilities, all of his flaws, he may be among the most fascinating people to serve in his century.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

What a meteoric rise. WW2 vet never holding office to VP in 6 years. Unprecedented before Trump besides maybe Grant.

Or Lincoln or Taylor.
