Bruce always winked a little to let the audience know he knows he's a bit of a fraud, yet, he's always taken the themes & characters of his songs seriously & asked the listener to do the same. To recognize that the big things matter, even if none of us is always that in-earnest.

The thing is everybody knows Bruce is a famous zillionaire, he more than anybody. He’s discussed it plenty of times—he’s self-reflective. He’s not pretending to be working class—it that’s his *actual world view*, regardless of his wealth, is in support of working class people.

Agreed. Much as no amount of success & maturity ever let him truly walk away from New Jersey, his Dad, or his Church.

He transformed from Jersey beach town bum to working class hero somewhere between "Darkness" and "The River"

Before Darkness. That was when he started reading books. While he was sidelined by litigation.

Feels like a draft. Seems Smith went into the article wanting to call Springsteen an imposter then learned he’s called his writing third person for years.
