You were doing OK until "refugee." Joseph & Mary were in Bethlehem because the government commanded them there to pay taxes. A Christian would know this.https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1209833386459750400 …

Today I join millions around the world in celebrating the arrival of divinity on earth, who came into this world not in riches but in poverty, not as a citizen but as a refugee. No matter where or how we celebrate, merry Christmas.

Read the Book of Matthew. Jesus and his family were forced to flee because of a well-founded fear of persecution by King Herod. This is the classic modern-day definition of a refugee. A Christian would know this.

Are we taking Buttigieg seriously, but not literally? Because that's not the part of the story he was talking about.

Yeah, if you want to get technical, he wasn't a refugee until Herod heard that a King had been born, timeline, but The Escape to Egypt is Matthew Chapter 2, so... That said, I don't take Buttigieg seriously or literally.

That's not true. They've been referred to or depicted as refugees for as long as I can remember. I'm Lutheran, so I can't speak for other churches.

Hi! Religion reporter here. Christians who argue Jesus was a refugee are typically referring to what happened AFTER Jesus was born, when Mary, Joseph, and the newborn child fled to Egypt. This exegesis is easily Google-able. Or you could just, you know, read it in the Bible. https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1209995941236936704 …

Pete is conflating the next part of the story with the Christmas story. For sure. But the fact you jumped all over this while ignoring POTUS spending the holiday rage tweeting tells us everything we need to know about the honesty you're using in this conversation.
