Thought experiment: All else being equal, if Trump were somehow removed from office via impeachment...wouldn’t Pence pardon him instantly & wouldn’t the party nominate him for 2020? And if he won, would his constitutional ‘clock’ on two consecutive terms start over?

An impeached official *can* be barred by Congress from holding office again, and the pardon power doesn't cover that. The current articles include that provision. (I know, I missed this the first time I went through the potential consequences). But he could still Tweet havoc.

Is this provision constitutional? Could they institute the death penalty if removed?

It's literally in the Constitution, so yes. They cannot use impeachment to jail or fine, leta alone execute. It's not a punishment.

Article I, Sec 3: "Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States."

I think they may not have included that provision in his impeachment, but also "Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States" probably doesn't include Congress bc of how the Constitution elsewhere uses the term "Office"
