I'd love to either write or read a study of bad Presidential leadership and why the worst Presidents failed so horribly at their job. Not controversial Presidents like LBJ or Jackson. I'm talking about consensus terrible Presidents like Pierce, Buchanan, and A. Johnson.

Buchanan was a great bureaucrat and Cabinet member. His skills were not suited for the Presidency. In a calmer time, he could have been average. But when studying them, it's important to realize that the post Compromise of 1850 America would have tested any leader to the extreme

Pierce perplexes me because a person can make the case that he had some decent accomplishments, if not outstanding elsewhere, and a talented Cabinet, but he so epically failed on the question of slavery. And then there's the family tragedy that surely broke him.

I'm about to read Robert Strauss' book on Buchanan "Worst. President. Ever."

Might assign it in a survey class if I like it.

Both Pierce and Buchanan need good new full length biographies. Existing stuff is mostly old or apologia (some NH-ites have tried to really rehabilitate Pierce).

Have you read the Wallner bio?
