Douglas pointed out, even after Lincoln died, that he was kind of a racist. Was that illegitimate because it didn't aid in the creation of a Republican coalition? Was he a pearl-clutching Never-Lincolner?

Not really a full & fair rendering of Douglass' writing on the topic, and again, I'm not arguing against criticism of one's friends. Once Douglass came around, he remained a lifelong loyal Republican. He broke with Sumner in 1872 to stay pro-Grant despite all the scandals.
