This is besides the point. By your argument, it would be somehow illegitimate for a journalist--say, WL Garrison--to criticize Lincoln. It's not illegitimate. And in such cases, it's necessary in proportion to the lack of explanation the politician gives for changing their tune.

It is not at all beside the point: it *is* the point. The foundation of opinion writing is knowing what path forward you're actually recommending. And there *were* purist abolitionists like Garrison who went relentlessly after Lincoln, & look like fools now for doing so.
