I'm not arguing against all criticism of one's friends; I've never written anywhere that took that stance. But choices of tone & emphasis & narrative are pretty easy to detect in opinion writing; who is treated as a friend in need of correction, who a foe.https://twitter.com/Timodc/status/1204503787362234370 …

I’m certainly guilty on the accusation of pessimism for future. And I dont agree with everything Shay wrote. But the implication here that writers should pull their punches on Haley when she screws up in the hopes that they might be aligned in the future is pretty hacky. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1204491926600404993 …

Opinion advocacy that isn't just horserace punditry should, as a general rule, have a point of view, a desired end state. Sometimes you can be frank that your end state is infeasible (libertarians are sometimes like this). Readers may have to infer it if you won't say it.

If your desired end state is a set of policies & institutions & you envision obtaining that without anything resembling a realistic coalition, then your advocacy really isn't offering the reader anything they can apply as an informed citizen.

The advantage of having fixed principles, of course, is that you can always argue in that direction, even if you accept falling short. But that also required knowing what those principles *are* & having some realistic idea of how they interact with the coalitions available.

The problem with being Against Trump as your only organizing principle, without any other defined end state or any sense of who you want to help you reach that end state, is that Trump won't be with us forever. We'll still need to know what we believe & where we're aiming to go.

I used to think policy was the guiding principle, because I didn't think the rule of law and constitutionalism were seriously at issue. They are. Until they are no longer at issue, voting is easy: For the rule of law, against the party enabling a mafia state.

Rule of written law and constitutionalism are part of the end state. And they are wholly incompatible with the Democratic Party as it has existed over the past several decades - and that's getting worse.

No Trump supporter, regardless of their past history, is credible as a proper guardian of the rule of law. Period. The right has proven they can't & won't stand for principle if they anticipate *any* political price for doing so from the rightwing base. Too weak to be trusted.

I'm reading this alongside a vid of Pompeo nodding along to Lavrov's denial of election interference. Is Dan SURE about this idea that GOPs are "compatible" with the Constitution? Sure seems like they're getting ready to steal another election. I don't see Dems doing that.
