Legal merits aside, spending years accusing Trump of treason, bribery, & collusion and then impeaching him for none of those things *but including an article on obstruction of Congress* as one of the 2 charges seems like disastrously inside-Beltway politics.

Let's face it, a lot of people feel that (1) Trump was elected, basically, to give Congress the finger & (2) Trump has no obligation to help anybody investigate him. I don't endorse those sentiments, but this is not the hill to die on.

If I was a Democrat, I'd likely support impeaching Trump *precisely because impeachment under these circumstances is an exercise in political messaging.* The House can, if it likes, use impeachment to make a case of presidential unfitness ahead of an election. But then sell that!

Not one vote is going to change to Trump's detriment next November by accusing Trump of refusing to help Congress remove him from office. I just don't see the political rationale.

During the Clinton and nixon impeachments this was considered very serious.

Nobody considered this serious in the Clinton impeachment, 81 Republicans even voted against article 4 that was about obstructing the house investigation.

It bizarre!! It basically says “Yeah, we’re too damn lazy to take you to court to enforce our subpoenas, so we’ll just pile this on the Impeachment.” It’s also bizarre that the only other Article of Impeachment is that POTUS exercised his Article II powers.

This is a step on the way to either a 'no' vote (the best possible outcome for Dems) or reducing it from impeachment to censure (the second best).

When I saw the "obstruction of congress" thing I wondered if senators are allowed to just vote "lol" during the trial.

It's a throwaway count to provide cover for moderates to vote yes on 1 and no on 2

Uh, no, it’s that he hijacked American (read: your) national security for his personal benefit. He also lied to Congress...but trifles. I remember when Republicans used to care about such trivial things like national security and individualism.
