No. This is totally wrong re the research part, Zaid. He’s is a very deep and wide ranging reader and he cites the texts he reads. This couldn’t be more mistaken.

What I’m saying is that he has read and understood countless books—he has a scholars depth regarding US history and has read much else. So the crack about wiki/social media is just completely wrong.

Look—not going to go around with you on this. You claimed he was doing “research” from valid Wiki/social media hits. That’s just untrue. It’s a cheap shot. It’s false.

Dowd was a reporter. Friedman, Kristof, and Cohen were all foreign correspondents. And there are probably others I'm forgetting. I'm not making a judgment on every one of their columns but they all have extensive reporting backgrounds and experience.

This misses the point. Columnists are fun to read. That’s our job. We get boring when we forget that and take ourselves too seriously.

Tbh, I'd be happy to abolish all columnists - left, center, and right - and give that attention to reporters. But sadly, nobody's asking me. Leaving that aside, "misses the point" how so? I was responding to Zaid's very specific prior tweet.

I'm obviously talking my book here, but I do think that opinion writing, done properly, plays a crucial role in organizing & synthesizing information for people who don't have time to read & catalog all the hard news. Doing away w/columnists is like trials without lawyers.
