2. There are numerous valid, specific, factual critiques of the package of essays launching the 1619 Project, and one has to labor to avoid them. My own thread just on Bouie's essay & its failure to accurately portray recent political history:https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1163842860132777984 …

3. The most notorious example of how the 1619 Project got it grievously wrong is the ahistorical treatment of the American Revolution; I touched just the surface of that here https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1163495003659952128.html … & herehttps://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1163548660480786434 …
Dan McLaughlin added,
Dan McLaughlinVerified account @baseballcrank"Most southerners" is further than I would go, but there is no question that the South had a lot more Tories/Loyalists than the non-slaveholding areas of the North did. The really active Loyalist militias, like Tarleton's, were in the South. https://twitter.com/McRibz/status/1163542654287663104 …Show this thread1 reply 7 retweets 36 likesShow this thread -
4. A serious effort to grapple with the problems of fact & perspective in the 1619 Project would respond to the specific critiques, e.g, https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/08/1619-project-new-york-times-king-cotton-thesis/ …https://www.lawliberty.org/2019/10/02/slavery-gave-us-double-entry-bookkeeping/ …

6. Now, I get that part of the goal here is to undermine the authority of respected scholars like James McPherson & James Oakes, but cavalierly dismissing them on the grounds of "what do white guys know about debates over slavery" is unhelpfulhttps://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1197648775977848833 …
Dan McLaughlin added,
Dan McLaughlinVerified account @baseballcrankMcPherson is, to put it mildly, a well-informed source; Battle Cry of Freedom is a masterpiece. The substantive & specific criticisms in this thread are, however, only a small subset of those that have been presented from a variety of quarters. https://twitter.com/wesyang/status/1197542213611339779 …3 replies 4 retweets 34 likesShow this thread -
7. At the end of the day, while individual scholars & pundits may earn more or less credibility from their body of work, historical debate is not advanced by ad hominems & closing your ears to voices that critique your narrative.

9. I mean, you deleted something you wrote on this very subject this very evening, but sure, some day when it's not a holiday weekend with my kids home, I will do a deeper dive. Meanwhile, it'd be nice if you promised to delete no more stuff.https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1200947667578294272 …

b-boy bouiebaisseVerified account @jbouiedude will you for once just put up or shut up. there are 40,000 tweets on my feed. i have no autodelete function. surely one of them will prove your point. surely a column will prove your point. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1200947028068622336 …Show this thread36 replies 3 retweets 47 likesShow this thread -

I lied in claiming that you deleted a tweet in that conversation - the screenshot of which I provided - by claiming that you deleted a tweet in that conversation, which you admit having done? Um...Ok. https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1200950034164043776 …https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1200950034164043776 …
Dan McLaughlin added,
b-boy bouiebaisseVerified account @jbouiethe reason i call you folks liars is because you lie. i deleted a tweet where i cursed at someone. the substance of the tweet was sarcastically replying to a claim that i had no expertise. the dude even posted it. https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1200948899529338882?s=21 … https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1200948899529338882 …Show this thread11 replies 2 retweets 44 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @baseballcrank
Dan—Jamelle deleted a tweet where he understandably lost his temper. But he insists he does not regularly delete tweets; you should stop accusing him of doing that. I know him, he’s an honorable person. His work? Have at it. But stop trashing him about deleting tweets.

That's just not accurate. Even leaving aside the number of times I've seen him delete individual tweets, he wiped the first several years of his tweets. He can defend that if he likes, but I'd appreciate if he stopped calling me a liar for pointing it out.
