My working definition of rich - not well-off, comfortable, prosperous, upper-middle-class, but *rich* - is whether you could afford to just stop working. If you still have to work, you're not rich.

Of course, there are very rich people who still work. But they don't work because they need the money, unless you define "need the money" by a particularly extravagant lifestyle.

I wouldn’t call 100k rich anywhere. Comfortable, yes. Rich, no. NYC living, however, is a choice of what to spend your money on.

Sure, but I bet your rent+taxes are about 1/3 of what they are in NYC. It's all relative.
