Using the names "Republican" and "Democrat" is misleading, as policies and platforms have changed over time. Conservative, liberal, progressive, etc...are more accurate representations of the groups involved.

See Dan, the parties, for some reason switched sides in the 1960's though there was little benefit in doing so. These things just happen like tidal waves and eclipses. By the way, don't forget the fact that all but 2 of the dixiecrats remained democrats until thier deaths.
