Given what we know about Trump and his team and given the very purpose of the Ukraine—to destroy a political opponent via the actions of a coerced foreign government—how would you suggest that knowledgeable political observers analyze the forthcoming election?

This depends if your definition of a free and legitimate election is one in which 1) the will of the voters - expressed through a legitimate system - was allowed to rule, or 2) the election was free of unfairly misleading information. A LOT of our elections have failed #2.

But focusing specifically on what we already know about Trump’s actions in both ‘16 and this cycle: Should a knowledgeable political observer not point to those actions as deeply concerning regarding the lengths Trump will go to win? Should that information be ignored?

“Misleading information” is not the standard by which we judge coercing a foreign government to gi. Up a bogus announcement of an investigation (not even an investigation itself). Misleading information is demagogic ads, for example.

Let's define here whether your definition is #1 or #2. For me, there is a whole world of fair criticism and even legal jeopardy for shenanigans up to & including abuses of government power that still fall in #2, but they do not mean an election was illegitimate or "stolen."

Ok. Let’s try this hypothetical: Trump succeeds in his plan to coerce Ukraine into “investigating” the Bidens. It results in a huge decline in Joe Biden’s support, but after he has been nominated, as Trump decides to ensure announcement is postponed until summer, 2020. Stolen?

No. Dirty tricks? Yes. Perhaps, depending on the circumstances, criminal or impeachable? Yes. But the voters decide. Your turn: #1 or #2? Because if you say yes to this hypo, you're using a version of #2.

Yes, 2. Because definitionally, the will of the people is being subverted along a continuum that becomes a difference in kind, not degree. Here’s what I mean: Harry Reid (among others) runs ads trashing most feared R candidate. The result is that candidate loses primary.

Let's try a more direct hypothetical: Harry Reid states, falsely, on the floor of the Senate where he cannot be held to answer for falsehood, that he has a source proving that Mitt Romney paid no taxes for years. Knowing fabrication.

Yes. Bad thing. Wrong thing. Outrageous thing. But not an election fixing thing. It’s public, accountable demagoguery—Reid stood behind a false statement which could be publicly rebutted. Voters could judge that for themselves. Subterfuge is unaccountable.

To be clear—while he couldn’t be rebutted on the floor of the senate, he certainly could be via the media. And was.
