None. But they never had a chance with Senate Republicans. They were never going to vote to convict Trump. The writing's been on the wall for weeks. But the fantasists and dreamers preferred to paint over it rather than read it.https://twitter.com/brithume/status/1197679369835229185 …

If the Dems can’t convince lame duck former CIA man Will Hurd, no Trump admirer, what chance do they have with Senate Republicans? https://www.nationalreview.com/news/trump-impeachment-inquiry-will-hurd-condemns-trump-conduct-but-not-convinced-its-impeachable/ …

Twenty was never in the cards. The only question was whether Democrats would get enough GOP senators to give removal a majority. And right now that's a big fat no.https://twitter.com/BretBaier/status/1197628940573167617 …

Wrapping up on set today-- a takeaway: Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX), a moderate, said while the president acted inappropriate on the call he does not see anything impeachable-- if you can't get Will Hurd it will be tough to get 20 GOP senators #FoxNews pic.twitter.com/InndPoGQUa

Republicans will dump Trump If they can be convinced they will be better off without him weighing down the party among independents in 2020 vs. the benefit they get for energizing their base with him around. Losses in KY and LA Gov. races are compelling arguments to dump him

Not at all mind-boggling how many people are invested in extreme partisanship that they cannot envision a way out

GOP support for Trump and opposition to impeachment are both around 90 percent in the last dozen or so major polls. When those numbers change, we can talk about Republicans on the Hill looking for a way out. Until then, it's all a lot of sound and fury.

Right. I agree with the general premise: the party would abandon Trump once there is widespread voter sentiment that it's likelier to win without him. I think in reality that sentiment is higher than 10%, but it is nowhere near the level needed to rip the Band-Aid.

Thom Tillis, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally, Joni Ernst, and Susan Collins all face primaries next year. The surest way for them to lose the general election is to not be in it because they lost the primary. So they're not voting against Trump (unless Collins decides to quit).

Which is why I've said impeachment dynamics will change once primary candidate filing deadlines pass. This helps you understand why Pelosi would have rather waited just a little longer to start hearings, and McConnell will likely rush the trial as soon as he can

Also, the primary is not the last time that Republican senators will need Republican voters. Ask Kelly Ayotte or Joe Heck. I think Trump is a liability. I do not think either Republican voters or Republican elected officials think he's a bigger liability than removing him.

I agree with this assessment, but at some point don't Republicans need to start thinking about a post-Trump strategy? Like Obama, Trump doesn't seem to be able to transfer his popularity to the rest of the party and Rs will need to keep their turnout numbers sky high to compete.
