The sad reality is that no Republican helped his or her career by repudiating Nixon in 1974, & no Democrat helped his or her career by repudiating Bill Clinton in 1999 or Andrew Johnson in 1868. Unknowable, but possible; it was a very close race. And even if you look at the other side, neither W nor Carter was part of the impeachment rampage in DC. Grant in 1868 tied himself in knots to avoid the whole mess.

if Ford's pardon of Nixon prevented him from winning in 1976 -- which much of the history of the time suggests -- would go against the argument that breaking from an unpopular president is political suicide. of course, politics more tribal now.

But not pardoning him would have been inaction, not sticking his neck out to attack Nixon. Big difference, in my view.
