Jefferson contributed a lot to America. As with Andrew Jackson, you can recognize that without defending the many awful things in his life, his record & his thinking. https://twitter.com/SohrabAhmari/status/1194266515736088581 …

Even Jefferson's presidency has that dual character. His first term was tremendous, capped by the Louisiana Purchase. His second term was horrible, the low point being the insane 1807 embargo.

On slavery, Jefferson was a slaveowner, had a dubiously-consensual affair with his slave by whom he fathered children, & balked at abolition. He also banned the slave trade & wrote the first federal slavery ban, in the Northwest Ordinance. With Jefferson, there's always 2 sides.

And America itself had two sides, really many sides. But despite the realities of what America was when it separated from the British Empire, it was ultimately conceived in liberty in plain and undeniable language. For that, "all honor to Jefferson."

Yeah, I don't want Jefferson "cancelled." I prefer to remind people that you cannot take him whole without swallowing a lot of awful things. His hypocrisy, his schemes & vendettas, his errors - all the stuff that was bad by the lights of his own day - is part of the story.

It's interesting to see Hamilton have his day while Jefferson sinks like a stone. This seems to be the case in every era. When one is up the other is down. But I honestly don't know what America would have become without the contributions of both.

The thing is, Jefferson's unique value is such that slavery sticks to him in a way that it doesn't to Washington or Madison, neither of whom was a starry-eyed idealist.

It's true. Uniquely powerful, yet most open to critique. Certainly a deep disappointment to the abolitionists of the next generation as Jefferson basically tapped out of the debate. Never wavered in thinking slavery was wrong though.
