On slavery, Jefferson was a slaveowner, had a dubiously-consensual affair with his slave by whom he fathered children, & balked at abolition. He also banned the slave trade & wrote the first federal slavery ban, in the Northwest Ordinance. With Jefferson, there's always 2 sides.

Jefferson has become a particular target for a type of conservative because he is vulnerable to attack on the slavery issue and they want to indirectly attack the founding principle of "all men are created equal" without risking a direct attack on the Declaration.
