It always amazes me how many mediocre to awful generals Lincoln had to go through before he finally found a few good ones.

Some of it was politics: he needed Banks & Fremont for Republican support, & needed McClellan & Butler because they were Dems. But McClellan was just awful, & Pope & Wheeler were not good either.

Still shake my head over McClellan getting a copy of Lee's orders to his generals at Antietam and sitting on it for a full day, giving Lee time to adjust. If he'd acted immediately like Grant would've, he could've routed Lee and won the war. He made cautious men look reckless.
