Snapshot of the GOP dilemma: in 1974, enough Republicans turned on Nixon to get him to resign. Gerald Ford, a respectable & decent man, took over. How did voters reward Republicans in the midterms? They lost 4 Senate & 49 House seats.

1972 was the high-water mark for GOP...they likely would have lost many of those seats anyway. 2016 was low-water mark (for winning candidate)

1974 was 6th year, poor economy, followed Nixon landslide. 2020 is presidential year, better economy, following Dem cycle. I am saying it was easier call to jump ship in '74 than it may be today.
